Michigan State University, founded in 1855 in East Lansing, is one of the largest public research universities in the United States. With over 50,000 students, MSU is known for its education, business, and engineering programs, and pioneered the land-grant university concept. Spartan athletics compete in the Big Ten Conference with tremendous success in basketball and football. Spartan Stadium provides an electric atmosphere for MSU football, while the Breslin Center has hosted multiple Final Four teams. The basketball program won national championships in 1979 and 2000 under coaches Jud Heathcote and Tom Izzo.
