About University of Michigan

The University of Michigan was officially founded in 1817 in Detroit, 20 years before Michigan achieved statehood, making it one of the oldest universities in the nation. It moved to its current location in Ann Arbor in 1837 with 40 acres of land. The university rapidly grew in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, establishing itself as a major research institution. U-M was one of the first universities to admit women in 1870. Its athletic program, particularly football, gained national prominence under legendary coach Fielding H. Yost in the early 1900s, solidifying the 'Wolverines' identity and establishing a tradition of athletic success.
