Georgia Institute of Technology

Founded in 1885 as the Georgia School of Technology, the institution was established as part of the post-Civil War Reconstruction efforts to industrialize the Southern United States. Classes officially began in 1888 with an emphasis on mechanical engineering. Over the decades, Georgia Tech expanded its curriculum beyond its initial trade school focus, adding electrical engineering, civil engineering, and other disciplines. In 1948, its name was changed to the Georgia Institute of Technology to reflect its broader technological and scientific research mission. The university played a significant role in the civil rights movement, desegregating peacefully in 1961. Today, Georgia Tech is a globally recognized leader in technological education and research.
